Custom Home Cost Worksheet
Custom Home Cost Worksheet
The most common question I get as a residential architect is: What does it cost to build a new custom home?
I hope that this spreadsheet illustrates why that is such a hard question to answer :).
The short answer is "it depends"!
Not very helpful, I know. That's why I came up with this template.
Construction costs vary based on location, scope of project, quality, complexity, challenges, extra amenities, builder caliber, and more.
Moreover, there are HARD COSTS and SOFT COSTS associated with a custom home project. Don't know what I mean? Don't worry, this will help you understand the key differences between them.
This spreadsheet is intended to help you with PRELIMINARY BUDGETING for your NEW CUSTOM HOME in AUSTIN, TEXAS.
Note that it assumes a few things: That you will be working with a professional builder who builds high-quality homes; that you are building a unique custom home that is designed by an architect; and that you are building in Austin, Texas. It does not apply to a remodel or addition project.
You can play around with the numbers and see where your budget falls and then make some decisions. You can estimate and evaluate the costs associated with the most common line items to be expected in a new custom home project. It may contain items that are not applicable to your project and also may not contain items specific to your project.
This cost worksheet is for informational purposes only and intended to help you see the big picture of what all goes into the budget for a custom home.
The input $ figures are an example only and are intended to reflect the average cost to build a mid to high-end finished home.
For precise numbers, you will need to get actual bids from builders and/or subcontractors. Do not rely solely on this sheet for your final project construction cost.
